The Chambéry Institute of the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Arts et Métiers – ENSAM was set up in 1906 as a "Grande Ecole d'Ingénieurs" (the Grandes Ecoles operate alongside Universities in France in a range of specialized fields). Today, ENSAM is one of France’s leading higher education and research institutions in mechanical and industrial engineering and design, and comes under the authority of the French Higher Education Ministry. ENSAM has 8 graduate and research centres around France and 3 postgraduate institutes.
ENSAM's main national research specializations include:
- Product development, materials, processes
- Design of industrial machinery
- Industrial systems
- Manufacturing design and processes for sustainable development
ENSAM’s postgraduate institute at Chambéry moved into Savoie Technolac in 1994. It has an overall staff of 18 including 3 teaching staff/researchers and 20 students.
Chambéry Institute can offer a variety of courses including post graduate training for recently qualified general engineers intending to work in product design and manufacturing. Working closely with the University of Savoie, the School can also provide support to manufacturing companies for their R&D projects in areas relating to materials, product dismantling/recycling, eco-design and manufacturing processes, and environmental management.
ENSAM plays a central role in the R&D work of the cluster CREER (Cluster Research Excellence in Eco-design & Recycling) which involves a range of partners including major industry partners such as Renault, Steelcase and Veolia Environment. This highly specialized cluster is supported by the French government and aims to bring together research actors in this field and, through collaboration, develop a knowledge capability to the benefit of industry in the wider region.
