IDPI was created as a light and flexible structure in 1996 by local economic, educational and industry stakeholders to improve the industrial capabilities of local small and medium sized companies. The Institute can provide technical support to companies in three broad areas, product design, manufacturing (including rapid prototyping, manufacturing process, etc) and marketing, and through its internship based Innovation and Industrial Development Degree Programme the Institute helps to provide local companies with a technically skilled workforce.

The Institute works closely with the University of Savoie, other local education providers and local industry (including Mitchell Sports, Salomon, RADIALL, MSM Signalétique, etc).
