The University of Savoie was created in 1979. Today, it offers a multi-disciplinary range of undergraduate courses and research capabilities geared to the needs of the region and its industry.
The University has over 12,500 students and enjoys close academic links with other regional higher education institutions, notably with the engineering focused Grandes Ecoles in Lyon and Grenoble. The University's Doctoral School (EDUS) has some 300 PhD students and has strong international links. Savoie is also a popular choice for international students with some 1,200 students from over 90 countries studying here annually.
The University possesses world class research strengths in the following academic disciplines:
- Geo-sciences and ecosystems
- Environmental engineering
- Mathematics, physics and chemistry
- The science of organizations, territories, representations
- Intelligent systems and cognition
- Advanced technologies
More than 5,300 students follow science based programmes at the University's Advanced Engineering School, 'Poly’tech', and at the Chambéry Institut Universitaire de Technologie (IUT). Both are located on the University's Savoie Technolac campus extension.
Poly’tech Savoie is part of the university and also a member of the Polytech Group, a national network of graduate Grandes Ecoles specialized in Engineering. It trains engineers in a wide range of advanced engineering disciplines including: composite materials, construction, environmental engineering and renewable energies.

The University of Savoie also has two undergraduate Institutes of Technology, or IUT, located on separate sites in Chambéry, on the Savoie Technolac Science and Technology Park, and in Annecy located less than an hour's drive to the north of Chambéry on the road to Geneva. These institutes provide undergraduate courses that enable students to become, for example, website designers, computer graphics designers or designers and managers in the manufacturing sector. In other words they provide the wide range of industry-relevant skills modern manufacturing companies need from the local workforce. The Chambéry IUT offers courses in materials science, applied arts (for example, in the field of ergonomic design), communications and electronic media, product design and packaging, and the environment. The Annecy IUT offers courses in mechanical engineering, manufacturing management, and ICT.

Research-Industry Collaboration
The University of Savoie works closely with other public research institutions and with industry. Examples of ongoing projects include:
The University of Savoie’s LOCIE environmental engineering research laboratory collaborates with HYDROLAC, a company specialized in water engineering on the RN201 roadworks decontamination study along the length of the Le Bourget lake.
Poly’tech Savoie’s SYMME engineering design research laboratory collaborates with Darlet Marchante Technologie (DMT) SA, a company specialized in plastics technologies on mechanical modelling work and a study into the automation of MESIM (Mechanical Simultaneous Stretching) production technology used in the production of technical plastic film.
The University of Savoie’s LAMA mathematics laboratory contributing to diverse disciplines such as geophysics, solid and fluid mechanics, biology, medecine, and chemistry is also involved in outreach to industry activities.
